Agarwood (also known as oud, oodh or agar is a dark resinous heartwood that forms in certain species of evergreen trees in S.E. Asia. The heartwood is initially light and pale coloured but may then be infected by a mould. The trees respond to the infection by producing a dark resinous substance. The heartwood then becomes dark, dense and resin-embedded. The resulting wood is known as jinko, aloeswood, agarwood or oud, and is prized for its distinctive fragrance making it ideal for use in incense and perfumes.
