Extracted by steam distillation from the leaves and flower tops.
Known as European, French, common or sweet basil.
Has a crisp smell, and is a favourite in aromatherapy.

 Properties:

Watery
Pale green/yellow
Aroma is clear, light and peppery

 Uses:

  • Tonic for nervous disorders
  • Stress related headaches, migraines and allergies
  • Relieves mental fatigue, bringing mind clarity and strength
  • Beneficial for respiratory tract
  • Asthma, bronchitis, sinus infections
  • Constipation, nausea, vomiting and cramp
  • Good for menstrual problems
  • Can minimise uric acid in the body, and therefore is good for gout, also arthritis
  • For the skin, it can be used to control acne. Also it refreshes the skin and eases insect bites.

 Other applications:

Widely used as a culinary herb, as well as in Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine

  • Not to be used in the bath if you have sensitive skin
