Warm, spicy oil, extracted from the seeds of Aniseed plant.
It is sometimes called anise or sweet cumin.
Origins Egypt and Greece
Not to be confused with Star Anise (illicium verum)

Properties:

Medium viscosity
Solidifies at low temperatures
May need to be warmed (by hand) before use
Has a strong liquorice smell.

Uses:

  • Muscular aches and pains and rheumatism
  • Bronchitis, whooping cough and colic
  • Cramp, flatulence, indigestion, catarrh and hangovers
  • Expectorant – stimulates lungs to expel phlegm
  • General tonic for circulatory and respiratory systems
  • Calming nerves and releasing anxiety
  • Easing menstrual pains and migraine headaches

Other applications:

Used in liqueur, cordial, toothpaste and mouthwash.

Warnings:

  • Extremely potent
  • Can cause dermatitis, not to be used if you have a skin condition
  • Can slow down circulation
  • NOT to be used during pregnancy
