Benzoin resin is usually obtained from India or Sumatra. It looks like crumbly, greyish-brown chunks streaked with white. When burned it has an intense vanilla-sweet fragrance, it crumbles easily, does not melt, and evaporates leaving little residue. However, if burned on its own it can be quite choking, so it is often used in combination with other incense, herbs and oils for various purposes.
