The Pagan religion is particularly interesting because it is 'the old religion', a very ancient expression of spirituality nurtured by Man’s natural surroundings. The Sun, the Moon, the Sky, the Seasons, and so on, all held very special places in the psyche of the Ancients (whether in Egypt, Rome, ancient France or Britain). Pagan or Wiccan beliefs thus encompass all that is natural, and the Ancients usually endowed each entity with a unique name (such as a specific god or goddess) and character of its own.
One such example in Wicca is the Green Man – the embodiment of the green, the woods, growth, etc. To 'worship' the Green Man is to respect and accept the Seasons, to respect and accept the cycles of birth, growth, death and rebirth. It is interesting to note that, although extremely ancient, Green Man Festivals still take place today, and his leafy face still adorns many an old church building.
