Paganism is enjoying a modern day revival, a “New Age”, and old practices are re-emerging in an attempt to stem the present tide of destruction and disrespect.
The Pagan religion is particularly interesting because it is “the old religion”, a very ancient expression of spirituality nurtured by Man’s natural surroundings. The Sun, the Moon, the Sky, the Seasons, and so on, all held very special places in the psyche of the Ancients (whether in Egypt, Rome, ancient France or Britain).
Hand in hand with Paganism, Wicca has grown out of the Pagan and mystery traditions handed down through the folklore of these ancient civilisations. In fact Wicca is a Pagan mystery religion of Goddess and God. A witch makes "magic" and worships the Great Mother Goddess and the Horned God. In other words, the witch has developed magical psychic powers, but also applies the wisdom to use them. In fact, out of the seeds of feminism has grown the use of the term 'Wise Woman' rather than 'witch', although it is true that both men and women are attracted by the idea of the Goddess/God deity. The traditional female witch worships the Divine in its female form, while the traditional male witch is a natural countryman in touch with the elements.
Pagan or Wiccan beliefs thus encompass all that is natural, and the Ancients usually endowed each entity with a unique name (such as a specific god or goddess) and character of its own.
The history of Wicca is that of natural magic, of Pagan mystery traditions, and of Celtic spirituality. But it would be wrong, despite the upsurge in the West in modern times of "the old religion", to think it is limited to the Western islands of Europe. Wicca itself represents universal belief systems, and there are similar traditions in existence all over the world.
