Why do we give gifts?
Maybe it's someone's birthday - from a close family member to someone we work with - we like to give them something that will help to make their birthday feel special. With family, of course, the gift may be more expensive, with a workmate perhaps just a small token, but the message conveyed will be similar - "Have a great day, and many more of them".
The Big One of course is Christmas. Parents queue for hours to buy the latest game, men suffer embarassment when searching for lingerie for wives and girlfriends, muscles ache with the weight of shopping bags crammed with "bits" for aunts and uncles, grandparents, in-laws, and even sons' fiancees. And all this so we can tie up a gift in a pretty ribbon and say "Merry Christmas".
Then there are all the other times:
The Weddings and Engagements, when we wish the happy couple all good luck for the future, and our gift might be something practical or a touch of elegance to add to their new home.
The Anniversaries, from the First to the Golden and beyond, beginning early on with good wishes for all the years to come, and later with blessings for all the years that have been.
The Graduations, the Coming of Age, the Christenings, the Passing of Exams, even the Passing of a Driving Test, have all become reasons for the giving of that special gift.
Perhaps the "giving" began (at least in some parts of the world) in the depths of winter, when the days were the shortest, the food stores were diminishing, and the promise of warmth and new life were far away. The traditional feasting and giving of presents in these dark days would be the gift of hope.
Nowadays a gift is simply an expression of love, respect, of community and appreciation that is intended to make the receiver happy and the giver fulfilled.
