"It is better to light a candle than to curse the darkness"
Today wax candles have a world wide appeal. Their origin is largely unknown but they seemed to develop in many areas simultaneously. The waxes that are used come from many different sources, including insect and plant waxes. Animal fats were predominant at first but human ingenuity discovered new and, more importantly, cheaper sources.
Initially candles were an important source of light and lengthened the daylight hours. Wicks were introduced and a superior quality candle emerged, both in brightness and longevity. Candles began to play an important role in religious ceremonies, such as the Jewish festival of light.
In the home, only the well off could afford to use them as a light source at first, but in the 19th century, mass production meant the masses could afford to use them.
Nowadays there are so many different types, shapes and qualities that there is a candle out there for almost everyone.
