"Pamper the body; ease the soul;
strengthen the spirit"
Throughout history Man has developed his awareness of cleanliness as being associated with health and beauty, and from that first dip in the sea, or shower under a waterfall, there has developed a global industry encompassing a vast array of bath and body products to preen, pamper and heal.
As early as 25BC, battle-weary Romans used to bathe in hot springs to ease tired bodies and heal wounds. (A spa is born!) And in 33AD Irish soldiers did much the same using a variety of herbs. Egyptian princesses are known to have used oils of Lavender and Chamomile, as well as rose petals, when they bathed. In fact rose petals were so loved by the Romans that roses were once grown in preference to crops. The petals were not only used in the bath: Roman ladies used them as a kind of night time facial. Much later, in 1647 there is evidence of Jewish women taking communal heated baths in which they used Rosemary and Orange peel, Chamomile and other herbs. In the 20th Century a certain Hermitage Hotel , built in 1910 in Nashville, employed a “Bath Concierge" who, depending on the client’s preference, might prepare a bath with rose petals and candlelight, together with champagne, truffles and top of the range holistic bath products and a fluffy bath robe. In the 1940’s many women used cornstarch in the bath to keep their skin smooth, as well as even using crushed strawberries, which are now well-known to make collagen (an important protein for skin) and to help heal wounds more quickly.
So, we have come a long way from the stories of Cleopatra - commonly believed to have bathed in ass’s milk to keep her skin soft and youthful - to Javanese brides traditionally stepping from a bath of rose petals cleansed and ready for married life - so that today, herbs, oils, flowers, fruits and salts are used extensively in bath and body preparations. Each ingredient advertises its own list of health and beauty properties, the byword being “natural”, and products range from hand creams to lip balms, from bath soaks and bombs, from gels and salts, and from shampoo bars to designer soaps.
Here at Clouds we present a range of supreme quality bath bombs, mallows and melts, as well as hand-made soaps, salts, powders and shower gels. Whether you are buying for yourself or looking for a gift, here you will find the perfect product.
